The Railway Training Institute (RTI), a division of the Kenya Railways Corporation under the State Department for Transport, celebrated its 61st graduation ceremony, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s transport sector.
Principal Secretary for Transport Mohamed Daghar presided over the event, which saw 1,415 graduates equipped with specialized skills in railway engineering, business, and maritime studies.
The RTI, one of Kenya’s oldest institutions, plays a vital role in developing the competencies needed in transport-related government agencies.
It offers affordable, specialized training tailored to Kenya’s narrow and standard gauge railway systems, which have been operational for over a century.
PS Daghar emphasized RTI’s regional significance, noting that the institute attracts students from across East Africa.
He highlighted its contributions to the workforce, with graduates often absorbed by institutions like Kenya Railways, maritime agencies, and other government sectors.
He also mentioned Kenya’s ongoing efforts to expand transport infrastructure, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connection to Uganda and the development of a 168-kilometer commuter rail system in Nairobi.
Addressing gender inclusion, PS Daghar noted a near 50-50 male-to-female enrollment ratio, with support from county governments and organizations to sponsor women and promote gender equality in transport-related careers.
The event reinforced the government’s commitment to advancing the transport sector and supporting the next generation of professionals in rail, maritime, and aviation.
