Teachers in Homa Bay County, affiliated with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), have complained about the transfer from the MiNET medical insurance scheme to the Social Health Authority (SHA). They even described the new cover as restrictive and insufficient.

The teachers claim that the SHA arrangement only allows them one private hospital in the county and they feel this move denies them the right of getting inclusive and flexible medical care.

KUPPET officials have criticized the approval procedures under the new plan as being frustrating, slow, and unclear, thus making it hard for teachers and their dependents to get timely treatment.

The union has warned that if the issues being raised are not resolved promptly, teachers will be forced to go on strike, thus disrupting the secondary schools’ learning activities in the whole of the county.

KUPPET is now urging the national government and health authorities to intervene immediately in the matter of the SHA cover implementation to ensure that teachers get quality, accessible, and affordable ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌healthcare.
