As the world commemorates five years since the emergence of COVID-19, China faces renewed global health scrutiny with an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV).

The virus, first identified in 2001, spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact. Though not new, HMPV’s seasonal peak during winter and spring raises public health concerns due to the absence of a vaccine and its weak immune response, which allows repeated infections.

Chinese authorities have reinstated precautionary measures like mask-wearing and frequent handwashing, reminiscent of early COVID-19 responses. This occurs amid lingering effects of COVID-19, which claimed an estimated 7-20 million lives globally.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has emphasized the need for global preparedness for future pandemics, warning, “The next pandemic can come at any moment.”The outbreak also coincides with ongoing debates about COVID-19’s origins.

On December 31, 2019, WHO noted Wuhan’s initial “viral pneumonia” cases. While many scientists believe COVID-19 originated in a wet market, suspicions of a lab leak persist.

WHO has urged China to share early pandemic data, stressing that transparency is essential to prevent future epidemics.

“Without transparency, sharing, and cooperation among countries, the world cannot adequately prevent and prepare for future epidemics and pandemics,” WHO stated.

China maintains it has been transparent. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “China has shared the most data and research results on the issue of COVID-19 origin tracing and has made the greatest contribution to global tracing research.”Reflection on COVID-19 Impact.

WHO’s statement marking five years since the pandemic began highlights the enduring global effects of COVID-19, acknowledging lives lost, health workers’ sacrifices, and lessons learned:

“As we mark this milestone, let’s take a moment to honour the lives changed and lost… and commit to learning from COVID-19 to build a healthier tomorrow.”
