The High Court in Murang’a on Wednesday convicted Ezekiel Saitabu Nakola for the murder of Grace Wangari Mwangi, a crime committed on March 20, 2017, in Karega Sub-Location, Kigumo Location, Kigumo Sub-County, within Murang’a County.

The body of Pastor Pius Muiru’s mother was discovered in a shallow grave in her homestead in Kigumo, Murang’a County. That was on the night of March 20.

According to investigations, the murder of Wangari could have been provoked by an illicit affair between Wangari’s watchman Ezekiel Saitambua, 33, and her daughter-in-law, Monica Muthoni, 36. The suspects have both given shocking confessions.

Justice Kanyi Kimondo delivered the verdict, stating that the prosecution, represented by Ms. AnnPenny Gakumu and Ms. Caroline Muriu, had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court’s decision was based on the testimony of twelve witnesses, which established a compelling chain of evidence against Nakola.

The court learned that Nakola had been employed by Grace Wangari Mwangi, who was the mother of Bishop Muiru, as a farmhand for ten years.

On the day of the crime, Nakola strangled Mwangi and buried her body behind a cowshed, where a cow’s carcass had been buried a few days earlier.

The burial site was covered with sand and banana stems. In a bid to cover up the murder, Nakola continued to steal from Mwangi’s MPESA account and took household items from his girlfriend’s house in Karega, Murang’a County.

Despite the absence of eyewitnesses or an admissible confession, Justice Kimondo ruled that the circumstantial evidence presented formed a complete chain leading to Nakola’s guilt.

The case is scheduled for mention on September 19, 2024, when sentencing will be pronounced.
