The High Court in Nairobi is on Wednesday set to resume the hearing of the high-profile murder case involving former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his co-accused, Michael Oyamo and Casper Ojwang Obiero.
The trio is charged in connection with the brutal killing of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno in 2018.
The case, which has gripped national attention for years, entered the defence phase after the court ruled that the accused had a case to answer.
In April, Obado took the witness stand in his own defence, testifying under oath that he had a personal relationship with the late Sharon Otieno and acknowledged being responsible for her pregnancy. However, he firmly denied any involvement in her murder.
“The relationship was personal,” Obado told the court. “I had nothing to do with her killing.”
Following Obado’s testimony, his co-accused, former Migori County communication officer Michael Oyamo and former county clerk Casper Obiero, also gave their accounts.
Both denied the charges and distanced themselves from the crime during separate appearances on the witness stand.
Today’s proceedings are expected to feature a new development in the case as a defence witness presented by Oyamo is scheduled to testify.
The prosecution is expected to cross-examine the witness after the initial testimony.
The court continues to navigate complex witness accounts and forensic evidence in a trial that has seen significant delays and public scrutiny.
