The Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, has confirmed the appointment of Hassan Omar as the Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
This appointment follows the removal of Cleophas Malala, who had been serving in an acting capacity since February 2023.
In a letter , Nderitu indicated that she had received formal communication from UDA regarding the changes.
She directed the party to conduct elections within the next six months to appoint substantive officeholders, as currently, all office bearers are serving on an interim basis.

“The office also notes that most of the current UDA officials are holding positions on an interim basis,” Nderitu stated. “In line with good governance practices and the mandate of this office, the party is hereby directed to finalize the party elections as soon as practically possible but not later than a hundred and eighty (180) days from the date of this letter.”
Nderitu further instructed UDA to publicize the change of Secretary General in at least one daily newspaper and on the party’s official website, in accordance with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, 2011.
The UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) revoked Malala’s appointment as interim Secretary General on August 2, 2024, citing wide and consultative deliberations in compliance with the party constitution.
The NEC has designated Vice-Chairperson Hassan Omar Hassan to act as Secretary General on an interim basis.
The NEC meeting, chaired by Embu Governor and party chairperson Cecily Mbarire, followed an incident where supporters of Malala stormed the party offices.
This incident occurred just a day after another group of founding members announced Malala’s ouster and declared Joe Khalende as the new Secretary General.
