Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has resigned, just a month after Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the Turkish coach would be leaving following the team’s poor performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Firat’s resignation also comes shortly after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections, in which Hussein Mohammed was elected as the new president.

This marks the end of Firat’s tenure, which lasted just over three years.

In November, Murkomen confirmed that the Ministry of Sports intended to activate a termination clause in Firat’s contract, which required him to secure AFCON qualification in order to retain his position.

The CS acknowledged being aware of the agreement between Firat and FKF, which stipulated that failure to qualify for AFCON would result in the termination of the partnership.

In a recent interview, Firat stated, “I have terminated my contract after the CS spoke so much about me, but let FKF make the official announcement.”

Firat’s final match in charge of Harambee Stars was the 0-0 draw against Namibia last month.
