Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has dismissed claims that recent arrests of political figures — including Mumias East MP Peter Salasya are politically motivated, stating that they are based purely on individual conduct and not political alignment.
“It is not accurate to say that only those opposed to the government are being arrested. That’s an unfair conclusion. Each case should be evaluated on its own merits,” Mwaura said.
Speaking during a media briefing, Mwaura emphasized that Kenya remains a democratic country where differing opinions are allowed and respected.
“We have seen dissenting voices even within ODM and UDA. People are free to speak their minds, and none of them are being targeted or arrested for expressing their views,” he added.
Mwaura further stressed that no one is above the law, and the government will not tolerate incitement or lawlessness.
“The government cannot be blackmailed simply because some individuals command a following. Every Kenyan deserves protection, and the law applies equally to all. We must uphold peace and unity — this is our only home,” he said.
MP Peter Salasya was arrested on Friday along the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway and later detained at Nairobi Central Police Station. He spent several nights in custody before being arraigned at the Milimani Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Salasya faced hate speech charges, which he denied. He was released on a bond of Sh500,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh200,000.
“Since the bond terms are not opposed, I grant the accused a surety bond of Sh500,000 or a cash bail of Sh200,000,” ruled Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai.
