Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni clarifies that the government is determined to raise the level of health services quality and restore public confidence in the system.
In a radio interview on Inooro TV, Muthoni cited the Quality Health Care and Safety Bill tabled as being in the right direction.
“This Bill is about patient protection and there being clear standards. All Kenyans should be able to access good quality health care not a luxury reserved for the select few,” she said.
Muthoni also cited ongoing reforms under the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying that the government intends to construct an even more responsive and people-focused system which is very much in accordance with the overall aspiration of Universal Health Coverage.
She emphasized that part of restoration of public trust is to increase accountability in the sector, adding that the reforms are intended to deliver not just services, but also equity and dignity.
In terms of matters of public health emergencies, the PS asserted that Kenya is better placed to manage such risks as Mpox. She reaffirmed the necessity of community sensitization, good hygiene, and swift action in managing outbreaks.
She also recognized the contribution of Community Health Promoters, particularly in difficult-to-reach places, adding they are instrumental in keeping people informed and engaged with care.
“They’re the connection between the health system and the population. From the tips on hygiene to ensuring sick children receive attention early, their work counts each day,” she said.
Muthoni concluded by calling on the public to stay engaged in the reforms in progress and avail themselves of available services, even as she emphasized that quality care should be accessible to all wherever they live.
