The government has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving lasting peace and eradicating alcohol and drug abuse in the North Rift region, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said.
Murkomen noted that security operations have significantly stabilized the region, with guns largely silenced since May last year. He said the ongoing disarmament exercise will be comprehensive and will spare no village, as the government moves to recover all illegal firearms in civilian hands.
The Interior CS emphasized that surrendering illegal weapons is not optional, warning that those found in possession of firearms will face the full force of the law. He said sustained peace in the North Rift can only be achieved through collective responsibility and close cooperation between residents and security agencies.
In addition to security operations, Murkomen challenged local communities to actively support the government’s crackdown on illicit alcohol and drug abuse, which he said continues to devastate the region’s youth. He urged residents to work closely with area chiefs and administrators to dismantle the illegal trade.
The Cabinet Secretary warned that suppliers, distributors and individuals he described as “big players” behind the illicit alcohol and drug business will be decisively dealt with, reiterating that the government will stop at nothing short of eliminating the menace and safeguarding the future of young people in the region.
