Starting in January next year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development will distribute over 230 milk coolers to 41 counties as part of efforts to curb milk wastage, given its highly perishable nature.

Jonathan Mueke, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Livestock Development, revealed that the coolers are currently being manufactured and will be allocated to the major milk-producing counties.

This initiative aims to support farmers and milk cooperatives by reducing milk loss and boosting their income.

The coolers will come in different capacities, including 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 litres, ensuring greater flexibility for local farmers.

Mueke noted that of the 5.2 billion litres of milk produced annually, only 811 million litres are formally processed, and the milk cooler project is expected to increase processed milk volumes by 400 million litres—an increase of 50%.

In collaboration with County Governments, 544 potential milk cooler locations have been identified, with 427 of these sites in 40 counties already verified. Of these, 285 sites are ready for installation.
