The government is considering setting up a military camp in Todonyang, Turkana County, to address the recurring insecurity that has plagued the region. This follows last month’s deadly attack by the Dasanach community from Ethiopia, which resulted in over 20 deaths and left many others unaccounted for.

Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Arid, and Semi-Arid Lands Beatrice Askul confirmed that security has already been reinforced in the area.

Speaking during a meeting with women leaders from the county, Askul revealed that a ministerial team has been established to seek a permanent solution to the ongoing security challenges.“We have intensified surveillance measures and are committed to restoring peace and stability in Todonyang,” said CS Askul.

Local leaders and residents have continued to express concerns over the increasing insecurity, urging the government to take more decisive action. Women leaders in Turkana have called on the Internal Security and Defence Cabinet Secretaries to develop a long-term solution to the frequent cross-border attacks.

Additionally, the women leaders have urged the government to invest in water and food programs to address food insecurity, which they say is worsening due to the conflict.

They also took the opportunity to thank President William Ruto for appointing more women to government positions, stating that increased female representation will help bridge gender gaps in leadership. With locals living in fear following the recent killings, many hope that the proposed military camp will provide lasting security and bring much-needed stability to the region.
