The government has announced that the new quality-based Milk Payment System (QBP) will reward farmers who produce high-quality milk with higher earnings.

Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Livestock Development, said that with participation from all major dairy processors and many cooperatives, milk pricing will no longer be determined solely by volume.

“Farmers will now be rewarded for nutritional value—premium prices for higher butterfat and protein content—hygienic and safe milk, and market competitiveness, which opens doors for Kenyan dairy exports,” Mueke explained.

He added that milk quality will be monitored at collection centers, assessing butterfat, protein, and other safety parameters, with higher-quality milk earning bonuses as recognition for farmers’ efforts.

“We are also supporting farmers through the AI Subsidy Program, subsidized livestock vaccinations, bulk milk coolers, and improved feed monitoring to enhance quality from the source. Together, we will transform the livestock sector and put more money in your pockets,” he said.
