While addressing mourners during the burial of Mzee Hezron Opiyo Otiato in Nyarombo Village, Interior PS Dr. Raymond Omollo emphasized the government’s commitment to revamping the sugar sector and improving food security.
Mzee Opiyo, the late patriarch of the Opiyo family and father to Hon. Jared K’Opiyo, Chairman of the SONY Sugar Board, was eulogized as a visionary farmer who played a pivotal role in transforming the Awendo sugar belt into an agricultural powerhouse.
Dr. Omollo used the occasion to highlight ongoing reforms in agriculture, particularly within the sugar industry, and reiterated the government’s efforts to support farmers through subsidized fertilizer.
“As a government, we have committed significant resources to revitalize the sugar sector. Today, most farmers who were owed money by sugar companies have been paid,” said Dr. Omollo.
“The next big task is instituting reforms in these institutions, and we urge farmers, communities, and leadership to collaborate with us to streamline operations.”
The PS also encouraged farmers to take advantage of the subsidized fertilizer to boost production. “Fertilizer has been available at affordable prices throughout the year. Let’s seize this opportunity to improve our yields,” he added.
Dr. Omollo noted that food security remains a priority, adding, “A year ago, we were struggling with the high cost of hunger. Today, the situation has significantly improved, and we are moving towards a food-secure nation.”
He assured farmers and the community that the government would continue to create a conducive environment for business and development.
“Security begins with food security, and we are working tirelessly with all stakeholders—from the village level to the national level—to ensure effective coordination of these programs,” he said.
Mzee Opiyo was remembered as a dedicated farmer whose contributions would leave a lasting legacy. “Rest in eternal peace, Mzee Opiyo.
