Boyd Were has secured the Kasipul parliamentary seat, taking over the remainder of the term left vacant following the death of his father, former MP Were Ong’ondo.

The 27-year-old, who ran on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, emerged victorious in Thursday’s by-election with 16,819 votes.

He beat his closest challenger, independent candidate Philip Nashon Aroko, who garnered 8,476 votes. A total of 10 candidates contested the seat.

Speaking after being declared winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) returning officer at Agoro Sare High School tallying centre on Friday morning, an elated Were praised the electoral process.

“IEBC conducted a free, fair and transparent election,” he said.

“The people of Kasipul have chosen a good leader. It is now my duty to serve them diligently. I am fully prepared to be their member of parliament.”
