The Gakoigo Stadium project in Maragua Constituency is set to transform sports infrastructure and unlock new opportunities for young people in Murang’a County through a major National Government investment.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the project builds on the legacy of the historic Gakoigo grounds, which have served the community since the pre-independence era as Murang’a Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) showgrounds and a public recreation space.
Following a technical assessment by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, the original site was found unsuitable for a world-class stadium due to terrain and space limitations. The project was subsequently redesigned into a dual-facility model.
A new 10,000-seat international-standard stadium is being constructed at Samar, featuring a standard football pitch, eight-lane athletics track, modern changing rooms, a VVIP pavilion and ample parking.
The historic Gakoigo grounds are meanwhile being rehabilitated into a training centre for grassroots and mid-level competitions.
The new facility will also host film and music studios, ICT facilities and commercial spaces, creating an integrated hub where sports, creativity, technology and enterprise converge.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting coordination and orderly implementation to ensure timely delivery and long-term sustainability.
