Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s lawyer, Tom Macharia, made headlines with a politically charged statement that referenced the popular phrase “Kufa Dereva, Kufa Makanga.”
This phrase has become synonymous with public discontent towards both President William Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua, with many Kenyans calling for their simultaneous departure from office.
Macharia defended his client by highlighting a recent address made by President Ruto in Murang’a, asserting that the president’s remarks served as confirmation of their earlier agreements.
“Our position was that the address by the president in Murang’a was, in fact, a confirmation of the agreements. The president was merely saying they are implementing the agreements they agreed upon, and it was incumbent upon his deputy to assist the president in confirming they were implementing the agreement,” Macharia stated.
The attorney’s comments were made in response to a clip played in court, where President Ruto assured Murang’a residents of their significant stake in the Kenya Kwanza government.
Macharia emphasized the need for collaboration rather than division, suggesting that the focus should be on supporting leadership rather than calling for it to falter.
“It is not to say kufa dereva, kufa makanga. It is to say okeni makanga na muokoe dereva,” he asserted, advocating for unity within the government.
This statement comes at a time of increasing scrutiny on both leaders, with critics questioning their governance and effectiveness.
