In a revealing interview with media personality Oga Obinna, beloved content creator Mayoyo peeled back the curtain on his personal journey, sharing heartfelt anecdotes and the trials that shaped him into one of Kenya’s rising entertainment stars.
Mayoyo, best known for his infectious humor and vibrant online presence, traced his path from aspiring lawyer to household name. After finishing high school, he pursued a career in law but faced early hurdles. “If you don’t attain the minimum grade, you first become a paralegal, then proceed to university,” he explained. However, financial strains forced him to abandon the dream after two years.
“My dad was the one supporting me, and I could see him struggling,” he said, recalling how his elder brother was also studying at the time. “I told my dad I wanted to earn my own money. At first, we disagreed, but eventually, it worked out. That’s when I dropped out.”
Despite the hardships, Mayoyo maintains a deep respect for his father’s sacrifices. With a mix of humility and humor, he shared a lighter moment from the interview: “A lot of ladies compliment me about the gap in my teeth,” he said with a laugh, showcasing his signature charm.
When asked about his identity as a creator, Mayoyo didn’t hesitate. “I’m a multi-talented creative,” he said proudly.
From comedy skits and dating shows to co-hosting a couples’ channel with his wife, his content reflects a wide-ranging passion for storytelling.
His love for performance started young. “There was an acting competition between school houses. I was in Blue House and ended up being the best actor. I didn’t even realise it I was just being myself,” he said. That passion continued into his high school years at Nyamagwa Boys, where he prioritized drama club over academics. “I used to memorise scripts more than chemistry,” he admitted with a laugh.
The road to success wasn’t easy. In 2016, inspired by his older brother’s stint on KTN, Mayoyo began experimenting with video content. But they faced major hurdles.
“We didn’t have a phone or camera to shoot. We relied on a friend’s camera, but he would later delete our videos. That made us give up.”
Still, he persisted. In 2018, he reached out to famed comedian Desagu for a collaboration and was surprised when he actually got a response. “We met up with a group of other creatives, including MCA Tricky. I really respect him.”
His breakthrough came unexpectedly. “Funny enough, we hadn’t even put that much energy into it. But it blew up, and a lot of comedians reposted it,” Mayoyo recalled, reflecting on the viral moment that launched his digital stardom.
Today, Mayoyo stands as a symbol of resilience, creativity, and self-belief proof that even when the odds are stacked against you, staying true to your passion can lead to unimaginable success.
