Four people belonging to the campaign team of former Chief Justice David Maraga were injured Tuesday evening after a serious accident that involved their car as they were heading back to Nairobi.
Maraga stated that when the accident took place, his group was on its way back from Nyamira after accompanying members from the United Green Movement (UGM).
Early reporting on the accident shows that the campaign vehicle collided with a lorry that lost control and drifted out of its lane.
A rescue team was mobilized soon after the incident, with the victims rushed to the hospital. No deaths were registered in this particular incident.
“We are informed of a ghastly road accident involving four members of our campaign team. They are all in hospital,” Maraga reported.
He further stated that his car was being followed by his convoy when the truck swerved from the road and crashed into his car, which was in the other lane.
Images taken at the scene show the car belonging to the convoy to be severely damaged, with the front section flattened, the windscreen smashed, and flat tires.
Maraga has urged Kenyans to pray for the wounded as they continue to follow the situation.
The accident came at a point when the concern for road safety was at its peak, taking into account the fact that another accident had occurred along the same road from Nairobi to Nakuru to Eldoret at Sachangwan, resulting in the death of at least one person and leaving 10 others badly injured.
Allan Ogolla, an enforcement officer from Nakuru, confirmed that the accident that occurred in Sachangwan was between three 14-seater matatus and two truck vehicles.
The events come at a time when the government has boosted check points on the roads in order to ensure that the festive season is safe. The National Transport and Safety Authority has partnered with the National Police and the Judiciary to increase check points on the major roads with the main objective of lowering accidents and eliminating corruption.
Road accidents have always been known to rise during the holiday season due to the huge number of vehicles, and the police have advised motorists to exercise caution when driving.
