A family in Matigari village, Laikipia County is in mourning after a brutal attack on Monday night left two people dead, one of whom has been identified as Stephen Lukivi Ekero, a father of four and a well-known tour guide based in the Masai Mara.
According to his wife, Damaris Lukivi, Stephen had returned home to visit his family while his tour vehicle was undergoing maintenance in Nakuru town. The visit turned tragic when unidentified assailants stormed their home and set it on fire.
Witnesses say Stephen initially managed to escape the flames but made a fateful decision to return to the burning house to retrieve his bag. It was during this attempt that he was caught and killed by the attackers.The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Local authorities, led by Rumuruti OCPD Francis Ng’ang’a, have launched an investigation into the incident. “We are actively pursuing leads and working to establish the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of life,” said OCPD Ng’ang’a.
The identity of the second victim has not yet been disclosed, pending notification of next of kin. Residents of Matigari village have expressed shock and fear following the attack, calling for enhanced security in the area to prevent further violence.
Stephen Lukivi is remembered by colleagues in the tourism industry as a dedicated professional and family man. His sudden death has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with many calling for swift justice.
Police have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
