The government has stated that the Homa Bay pier development is now 70% complete, bringing the region closer to having a state-of-the-art port with ferry services.
In a statement Posted on X on Monday, February 23, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that the ongoing construction is aimed at building basic facilities found in a port. Among these facilities is a modern terminal, warehouse facilities, power, a waiting area for the ferry, and a permanent Kenya Ports Authority office.
The construction has also taken into account security, with a pedestrian screening area and water storage tanks.
The shoreline has been quiet for some time, but with a brand-new pier in development, it’s getting a boost once again as a thriving economic center.
Upon completion, the plan will include all the counties bordering Lake Victoria, namely Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, Siaya, and Busia.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary announced that they are in the process of acquiring a new public ferry, which will be used for transportation between Homa Bay and Kisumu, and also for Mbita and the islands such as Mfangano
Apart from the pier, there is other regional action that is also underway. A fresh fish market is now open, serving more than 2,000 traders. There is also cold storage, ensuring that the fish is kept fresh and that there is a high level of hygiene.
Beside this is the construction of an amphitheater that will be near the lake as well as the pier, intended to promote tourism.
