Facebook Goes Quiet Worldwide, Users Left Frustrated

Thousands of Facebook users around the world woke up to a ripple of frustration today, March 4, after the popular social network went silent around the world.

The platform went offline on the morning of March 3, around 3:40 pm, as users were unable to access their accounts or could access them only intermittently.

This was confirmed by Netblocks, which monitors internet traffic worldwide and said it was not caused by internet blocks in any country.

People trying to log in to the network, however, saw the usual message:

“Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”

However, some users in Kenya could still access it on desktop if they were already logged in, though even then, opening a new window or refreshing the page often led to this message: “The page cannot be displayed.”

However, on Wednesday morning, all seemed to be well as users were able to access their accounts, a sign that Facebook engineers had fixed the issues causing the platform’s downtime.

This is not the first social media platform in Kenya to experience downtime this week as users of TikTok also experienced some issues on the platform as they sought to upload their videos.

This is a sign of how much some people in Kenya are dependent on social media as a tool for staying connected and accessing information.
