Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi on Wednesday morning reprimanded Senators for engaging in side shows and political bickering during a highly sensitive session investigating the death of university student Albert Ojwang.
“Honorable Senators, we are not here for TikTok bites. We are here on a very serious matter,” Kingi said, cutting short a growing disagreement that erupted shortly after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja was invited to speak.
The session, convened to get answers surrounding Ojwang’s controversial death, had earlier been addressed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who paved the way for Kanja to take the floor. However, heated exchanges among lawmakers caused a brief disruption, prompting the Speaker to intervene.
Kingi called for calm and urged House leadership to consult before resuming the session. He emphasized the gravity of the issue, reminding Senators that the tragedy had touched the entire nation.
“This matter has affected everybody. Everybody is in pain. So let us not try to show the world that it is only an individual in this chamber that is in pain,” he stated firmly.
Despite the tense moment, the Speaker confirmed that both Murkomen and Kanja would be subjected to questioning by Senators as the inquiry proceeds.
Ojwang’s death has sparked national outrage, with growing calls for transparency and accountability from the country’s security agencies.
