Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has praised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for the success of the Dishi Na County program, which now provides meals to over 310,000 learners in Nairobi.
Speaking at the 1st Nairobi Health Scientific Conference 2024, Kindiki emphasized the persistent issue of malnutrition, which continues to be a major public health challenge in Kenya. He lauded the program’s innovative approach to tackling food insecurity and ensuring that children have access to affordable meals.
“Malnutrition remains a pressing issue due to inadequate food and limited access to healthcare. The Dishi Na County initiative, which provides meals for just five shillings, is a remarkable solution,” said Kindiki.
The Deputy President also highlighted the socioeconomic disparities in Nairobi, a city that hosts over 7 million people during the day and 5 million at night.
He pointed out that poverty in informal settlements has left many families unable to provide consistent meals, contributing to school absenteeism.
“Those who can afford three meals a day may not fully grasp the transformative impact Dishi Na County has had on thousands of learners in Nairobi. Governor, you are doing an excellent job alleviating the hardship these children face,” Kindiki noted.
Launched in August 2023, the Dishi Na County initiative currently serves meals to students in more than 230 public schools across all 17 sub-counties of Nairobi.
