The Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, Dennis Itumbi, has condemned The Standard newspaper for branding the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA)’s CEO David Mugonyi, an “enemy of the press.”

Mugonyi has been on the receiving end from some quarters after ordering the stoppage of June 25 demonstrations’ live coverage by the media and subsequently switching off signals for the stations that defied.

Taking to social media, Itumbi defended the CEO, saying that the decision was warranted to prevent throwing the country into anarchy.

"Mugonyi David had to make a decision. When others chased chaos for clout, David Mugonyi chose country over cameras. When others chose hashtags and retweets, you chose to click Subscribe on +254. That’s not censorship. It is courage. No Kenya, no newsroom. No country, no press freedom," Itumbi said.

The renowned digital strategist said that though the move might be unpopular, Mugonyi will be remembered for his bold decision that saved the country.

"For that decision, do not expect salutes and accolades at the moment, but eventually, the country will remember your bold decision. We all know that some media act like unregistered political parties. NOT, newsrooms. Mugonyi chose Kenya," Itumbi added.

Itumbi further encouraged Mugonyi not to shy away from making the same decision again if a similar situation occurs.

"Please, ndugu Mugonyi, if such a moment presents again, do not shy from choosing Kenya again. Every time. All the time. This was PATRIOTISM UNDER PRESSURE. Like many other countries in similar circumstances, you made the right choice!" said Itumbi.
