The Ministry of Defence has tabled its budget estimates for the 2025/26 Financial Year, with a strong appeal for increased funding to support the Kenya Defence Forces’ (KDF) operational readiness and recruitment needs.
Appearing before the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations at Parliament Buildings, Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, accompanied by Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt. Gen. John Omenda, laid out the Ministry’s funding priorities. The session was chaired by Belgut MP Hon. Nelson Koech.
Dr. Mariru underscored the Ministry’s strategic mandate in safeguarding national security and maintaining the territorial integrity of the country.
He urged the committee to approve the proposed budget, noting that enhanced financial allocation is key to sustaining core defence functions.
A major focus of the presentation was the need for fresh recruitment into the KDF. Dr. Mariru emphasized that adequate resources are vital not only for replenishing ranks but also for facilitating career progression among current personnel.
Lt. Gen. Omenda reinforced the call, stressing that timely recruitment is critical to ensure KDF’s operational effectiveness and seamless generational continuity within the ranks.
The session was also attended by senior civilian and military officials from the Ministry of Defence, who reiterated the importance of sustained investment in personnel and infrastructure to keep pace with evolving national and regional security dynamics.
The Committee is expected to deliberate on the proposals before making final recommendations to the National Assembly.
