A group of Democratic Congress Party (DCP) members from Meru County have threatened to quit the Rigathi Gachagua-led party after what they described as the unprocedural changes in the county party leadership.

On Saturday, the discontented supporters demanded that the party’s Meru town offices be reopened for county chairperson Timothy Kithinji, whom they allege was unprocedurally replaced by James Mithika, returned to his position.

They further alleged that DCP national organising secretary, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, was meddling with grassroots leadership and disempowering the party by not being transparent in their activities in the county. “We will not give a few individuals the chance to impose leaders on us.

Members have the right to elect their representatives, and due process must be followed,” one of the supporters told journalists during the protest.

The debate is now holding the party support base in the county in the balance as the aggrieved members have sworn to leave them if their concerns are not addressed.

By the time this copy was going to press, party officials at the national level had yet to release a statement on the issue.
