The Kenya Ports Authority Makande Welfare Hall was the epicenter of volleyball drama this weekend, as the DCI Queens pulled off a monumental upset to knock out volleyball heavyweights Kenya Prisons in a scintillating semifinal clash of the Kenya Volleyball National League.
In a “best of three” series that delivered nail-biting action and unmatched athleticism, the DCI Queens displayed tactical brilliance, mental grit, and relentless energy to win both matches and secure their place in the league finals.
Game 1: Fire from the First Serve
The first encounter between the two powerhouses ignited immediately from the first serve. DCI stormed into an early lead, maintaining their momentum to take the first set 25–21. Kenya Prisons retaliated fiercely, claiming the second set with clinical precision.
The third set turned into a fierce tug-of-war, with both teams trading points in a high-stakes duel. DCI narrowly edged the wardens 26–24, but Kenya Prisons fought back to level the match at two sets apiece, setting the stage for a dramatic fifth set.
Substitute Caroline Jeruto became the game-changer, unleashing a string of powerful attacks that overwhelmed the Prisons’ defense. A critical timeout by coach Patrick Sang reignited DCI’s composure, and the Queens held off a late surge to clinch the final set 15–12.
Game 2: A Repeat Thriller for the Ages
The second match, played earlier today, proved to be another electrifying five-set classic. Eager for redemption, Kenya Prisons came in with renewed vigor but found themselves once again struggling to contain DCI’s revamped tactics.
DCI captured the first two sets 25–22 and 25–21, but the Jailers, energized by their fans, clawed back to take the third and fourth sets, forcing yet another decider.
In the fifth set, the detectives exploded to a commanding 6–1 lead, with standout performances from Sarah Namisi and Sharon Jeruto. Despite a brief collapse that allowed Prisons to surge ahead 12–10, DCI regrouped with ferocity. Caroline Sirengo and Namisi spearheaded a blistering offensive that saw DCI seal the set 15–12, sparking wild celebrations in the packed hall.
Road to the Finals
With the 2–0 semifinal series victory, DCI Queens now set their sights on Kenya Pipeline Company in what promises to be a high-octane final set for June at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.
Team Manager Neddy Kilimo expressed her elation at the team’s remarkable achievement, praising their resilience and unity. “This is more than a win; it’s a statement,” she said.
DCI’s Director of Personnel, Mr. Francis Ndiema, who joined the team in their celebrations, lauded the players’ outstanding performance and urged them to go all the way. “Don’t settle for second. We believe in you,” he said. His sentiments were echoed by DCI Administrative Secretary Mr. Peter Sichangi, who reaffirmed the institution’s support for the team’s championship push.
As DCI Queens march into the finals, their eyes are firmly set on the ultimate prize cementing their legacy as champions of Kenyan volleyball.
