CS Opiyo Wandayi Faults Kalonzo and Wamalwa Over NADCO Report Remarks

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has taken issue with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, accusing them of making misleading comments on the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.

Speaking on Sunday, December 7, the CS addressed the remarks the two leaders made a day earlier during the funeral of Beryl Odinga, the late sister of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Wandayi said their statements painted a distorted picture of the government’s progress in executing the report’s recommendations.

Wandayi reserved his strongest criticism for Wamalwa, arguing that the former Defence CS had no moral authority to question the process because he himself declined to endorse the report.

“On the last day, while signing the report, Wamalwa ran away and declined to sign. He hid somewhere in Kilimani,” Wandayi claimed.

According to the CS, the funeral in Bondo would have offered him an ideal opportunity to respond, but circumstances didn’t allow it. He said Sunday’s address gave him the moment to set the record straight.

At Beryl Odinga’s burial, Wamalwa had expressed concerns that key proposals they championed under NADCO remained unfulfilled particularly justice for victims of election-related unrest.

In response, Wandayi insisted that the government was actively working to compensate victims of political confrontations dating back to 2017. He argued that dismissing the initiative was unfair, especially coming from leaders who previously served in government during similar periods of unrest.

“When the government has gone a step further to establish a committee to undertake compensation of all victims of election clashes since 2017, he goes ahead and rubbishes that initiative,” Wandayi said.

“The only honourable thing he can do is to allow the committee to complete its work despite the challenges it’s facing in court.”

The CS urged political leaders to remain truthful, saying honesty was critical in earning and keeping public trust. He added that the recent political exchanges had revealed who genuinely stands with the Luo community as it prepares for a new political chapter following the passing of Raila Odinga.

“Now we know our true friends, and we know those who are against us as a community. We have decided we are going forward together,” Wandayi said.
