Cardinal John Njue now says he was not invited to the upcoming conclave to elect a new pope following Pope Francis’s death.
Cardinal Njue, 79, the only Kenyan cardinal eligible to vote in the gathering of 135 cardinals at the Vatican, said he did not receive any formal invitation to attend the papal election.
The man of God’s remarks were contradicted by Nairobi Archbishop Philip Anyolo, who confirmed that the cardinal had been formally invited.
"In response to various inquiries concerning whether His Eminence John Cardinal Njue will be participating in the forthcoming conclave, I hereby confirm that although he is eligible to participate and was officially invited through the Apostolic Nunciature of Kenya, he duly communicated to the competent office of the Holy See that, owing to his current health condition, he will be unable to travel to Rome and take part in the conclave,” said Anyolo.
Anyolo insisted that Cardinal Njue’s absence is due to health concerns. However, Njue disputed claims about his health, dismissing suggestions of illness or mental incapacity.
