Mukuru Kwa Njenga– The prime suspect in the Kware murders, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, has escaped from police custody.
Jumaisi escaped from Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday, August 20, alongside 12 Eritreans who had been detained in his cell over illegal immigration.
The incident was confirmed by the Nairobi regional commander, Adamson Bungei.
He said Police Constable Gerald Mutuku was making routine visits to the cells, accompanied by the canteen manager, to serve breakfast to the suspects.
However, when he opened the cell door, he discovered the 13 suspects had escaped.
They cut the wire mesh at the basking bay and scaled the perimeter wall to their freedom.
Previously, Jumaisi reportedly admitted to killing up to 42 women. He, however, later retracted his confession.
Last Friday, police were granted seven more days to detain Jumaisi and two other suspects in the Kware killings, Amos Momanyi and Moses Ogembo.
The trio had been presented before Makadara Principal Magistrate Irine Gichobi where the prosecution sought the court’s permission for them to be detained for 21 more days.
However, after submissions from both parties, the court ruled that Jumaisi be detained at Gigiri Police Station for seven more days.
