Senator Samson Cherargei

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has claimed that 60% of Kenyans are backing his Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2024.

The bill proposes term extensions for elected leaders, including the president, to seven years.

The bill also proposes the creation of a prime minister’s office and an increase in funds allocated to counties.

Speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, August 29, Cherargei claimed the majority of Kenyans are in agreement with the bill’s proposals with only 40% opposing them.

However, he lamented that those opposing the bill had been insulting him through his personal phone numbers, lamenting a data privacy breach.

Article 136 of the 2010 Constitution currently caps the presidential term limit to five years, renewable only once.
