Soldiers Bag Bronze at Africa Boxing Championships in Congo

Four athletes from the Defence Forces Amateur Boxing Association (DEFABA) represented Kenya at the Africa Federation Boxing Championships in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

They were part of a Kenyan team that achieved a commendable third-place finish among 25 participating African nations.

During the championships, which took place from October 14 to 27, DEFABA boxers scooped two bronze medals to Kenya’s overall tally.

Corporal Abednego Kyalo from the 23 Mechanised Infantry Battalion secured a bronze in the flyweight category, while Senior Private Robert Okaka from the Kenya Army Corps of Aviation won bronze in the light heavyweight category.

The other two boxers, Senior Private Peter Abuti and Chris Ochanda, also performed admirably but faced split decision losses in the quarterfinals.

Overall, Kenya concluded the championships with 1 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

Warrant Officer II Nelson Otieno, DEFABA’s Assistant Team Manager credited the team’s success to rigorous training, dedication, discipline, and commitment.
