Mombasa-based chef Yusuf Garani has completed his grueling 130- hour barbecue marathon on Saturday August 8, 2026 at Swahilipot Hub, Mombasa County.
The feat, which surpassed the previous Guinness World Record for the longest barbecue marathon, is a historic endurance, placing Kenya on global culinary map.
Garani began his marathon on August 2, 2026, with his ambitious goal of completing 130 hours and breaking the existing record of 98 hours and 8 minutes, set by South African chef Gielie Basson in 2025.
In the five day marathon, Garani stood by the grill tending to sizzling meats and aromatic spices, fueled by determination and the support of his community. The marathon not only tested his skills but his endurance, discipline and resilience.
“We finally hit the end of the road. It was a hard journey but Alhamdulillah we made it. I’m thankful to all who supported me through this tough journey. I really appreciate the mob love,” Garani said.
He received overwhelming support from the public, fellow chefs and well-wishers, with Kenyans turning up at Swahilipot Hub to cheer Garani on during the record attempt.
