The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released new information regarding the ongoing investigation into the road accident that resulted in the death of former Cabinet minister and Member of Parliament for Lugari, Cyrus Jirongo, and has confirmed that the driver of the bus that was involved in the accident has been rearrested.
In a statement released on December 16, 2025, DCI indicated that:
“The preliminary findings confirm that the accident took place on the night of December 13th at Karai, situated near the Nakuru/Nairobi Highway.”
This comes after speculation on social media over the authenticity of the accident scene with possible interference.
The detectives stated that the driver of the Climax Company Ltd bus, identified as Tyrus Githinji Kamau, had been previously questioned in a bid by detectives to aid in investigations but will be needed to report to Naivasha Traffic Base by December 22, just before the Christmas holiday.
Kamau was released on cash bail and is being investigated for death by dangerous driving.
“Tyrus is out on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. He will report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action,” the DCI stated.
In the light of the investigations still undergoing, the police have managed to obtain the testimonials from the night guard and the fuel attendant who were on duty at the petrol station near the scene of the accident at the time the accident happened.
The CCTV timeline and forensic analysis
Following the incident, the DCI established a combined force of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to handle the case.
One of the important pieces of evidence retrieved is the CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station; this footage has been analyzed beforehand. According to detectives, this footage reveals Jirongo arriving from the direction of Nairobi at 2:18:40 am, though he did not pull in to refuel his vehicle.
At 2:19:10am, he stopped for a brief moment at the station exit before turning right at 2:19:19am to return towards Nairobi. Only seconds later, at 2:19:25am, a public service vehicle bus is seen ramming into his car.
The accident involved a vehicle belonging to Jirongo with reg. no. KCZ 305U and a bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd with reg. no. KCU 576A. The police noted that the head-on collision occurred about 2:19 am, and the vehicle went 25 meters from the point of impact while the other 50 meters.
The detectives are also reconstructing the last hours of Jirongo’s life and have been taking statements from people he interacted with earlier in the night. The list of people who have been interviewed includes people who attended a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
“Further investigations are being conducted on the CCTV footage, and more statements are also expected from the passengers who were on the bus and other eyewitnesses,” the DCI stated. However, upon the conclusion of the inquiries, the file will then be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further directives.
