The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, a suspect who died after being held in custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi.
According to the statement released by NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, Ojwang was lawfully arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on allegations of false publication.
While in custody, he reportedly sustained head injuries after hitting his head against a cell wall.
Police say officers on duty responded promptly and rushed Ojwang to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has been reported to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which has launched a formal investigation in line with statutory requirements.
The police service reiterated its commitment to upholding constitutional standards and the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
