Just two days after celebrated Kikuyu gospel artist Philip Kimani Abba declined a Sh1 million prize from Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge “Kururia,” another gospel musician has followed suit.
Dr. Sarah K, a veteran in the gospel industry known for hits like Naliita, I Made It, Mindi Ona Mindi, Nasema Asante, and Sio Mimi, also turned down the cash reward—originally offered as part of a public online poll organized by the MP to recognize influential gospel artists and content creators.
Kimani Abba had emerged as the winner of the poll, which was initiated by Kururia as a way to celebrate those making a positive impact through media and music.
However, he graciously declined the reward, requesting that it be given to the runner-up—Dr. Sarah K—instead.
In a statement shared later, Sarah K too declined the prize.
“Thank you, Mheshimiwa. And to all supporters and my fans, thank you for voting for me,” she said.
“I also agree with Mheshimiwa. The one million support should go to someone truly in need. Thank you again, and may God bless us all.”
Kimani Abba had earlier expressed gratitude for the recognition:
“Hello Mhesh, I really thank God for you and your team. The survey you carried out a few months ago, in which I was rated among those doing well in gospel ministry through music, was a great morale booster for me.”
Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge “Kururia,”.
He further explained his decision:
“I’ve come to understand that fans not only care about the music but also about the character of the artist. The overwhelming support I received through the votes was more than enough appreciation. Therefore, I do not wish to proceed with the contest. To all my fans who voted passionately—thank you. I wish the next winner all the best.”
The actions of both artists have been widely praised for declining politicians cash prizes, a move that have been embraced by some mainstream churches but many Evangelical churches have been taking the money. yet to.
Kimani Abba is best known for his gospel hits such as Amukira Igongona Ria Ngoro Yakwa, Abba, Ni Ngutoria, and Korwo Ndarega Uhonokio.
