Chief Justice Martha Koome has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt), Honoris Causa, by Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) during its 26th Graduation in Meru County.

The award was in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the legal profession, administration of justice, human rights, national development and service to the society.

Koome expressed her deep gratitude to the university for recognizing her contribution, stating it’s a reminder that true leadership and professional achievement lie not in personal accomplishments.

“I receive this distinguished honor with immense gratitude. To me, it is a powerful reminder that the true measure of education, leadership and professional achievement lies not in personal accomplishments,” Koome said in statement.

She also thanked the university’s chancellor, Board of Trustees, the University Council, Senate, Management, faculty and the entire Kenya Methodist University fraternity for this recognition and for their continued investment in education and national development.

Koome’s professional journey in the legal sector spans for more than three decades, having been admitted to the Kenyan bar in 1987.

In May 2021, Koome made history becoming the first Kenyan female Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, marking a significant milestone in the country’s judicial history.

Beyond her judicial responsibilities, she has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at advancing women’s rights, protecting children and strengthening access to justice.

At the graduation she congratulated the class of 2026, advising them to use their knowledge and opportunities to serve in humanity and uphold integrity that would make a difference in the society.
