Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on African countries to develop, own and lead emerging technologies instead of relying on imported innovations.
Speaking at the opening of the Africa Technology Leadership Conference 2026 in Nairobi, Mudavadi said the continent must transform its technological ambitions into economic opportunities through investment, research and innovation.
The conference, held under the theme “From Technology Ambitions to Strategic Advantage,” brought together researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and international partners to discuss ways of leveraging science, research and technology for diplomacy, capital and implementation.
Mudavadi emphasised the need to strengthen links between research institutions, investors, industries and global markets to accelerate technological development and create economic value.
He also highlighted the importance of data sovereignty and digital resilience in enabling African countries to protect their digital interests while participating in the global technology economy.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary said Kenya’s young innovators need improved access to funding, stronger research partnerships and opportunities to establish competitive businesses.
He added that investing in young people would support job creation and expand opportunities in emerging industries.
Mudavadi urged African countries to harness their talent and build homegrown technologies, saying the continent must position its innovators as creators and owners of future technologies rather than merely consumers.
