Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has hinted that he could soon unveil a political party as efforts to register the Linda Mwananchi movement continue to face hurdles.
Sifuna made the remarks on Friday during the burial of Gloria Sekeiyan Khalwale, the wife of Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, at Malinya Stadium in Kakamega County.
The senator was responding to calls from mourners who urged him to form a party that he could use to pursue his political plans ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“I have heard calls on the need for Sifuna to have a party. I want our people to understand: do you just sit and think that Sifuna doesn’t have a party?” Sifuna said, drawing cheers from the crowd.
Sifuna said his team had been working on securing registration for Linda Mwananchi but accused authorities of frustrating the process.
He, however, asked supporters to remain patient, saying they would soon reveal the way forward.
“We will come here and let you know the name; leave that to us,” he said.
Sifuna also referred to the political lessons he said he and his colleagues had learnt from the late opposition leader Raila Odinga.
“Even if you despise us and think that we are kids, we learnt all these from the late Raila Odinga,” he said.
Linda Mwananchi registration
The remarks come after the Registrar of Political Parties rejected an application to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya (LMPK).
The application was turned down over similarities between the proposed party’s name and slogans and those already used by other political parties. Public interest concerns were also cited.
Leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement have since been engaging the Registrar of Political Parties, John Cox Lorionokou, in an effort to resolve the matter and pave the way for registration.
Sifuna did not give the name of the party his team may unveil or say when the announcement will be made.
His comments come at a time when political parties are already preparing for the 2027 elections.
The IEBC on Thursday published the election calendar for the August 10, 2027 General Election, giving parties a series of deadlines to meet.
Among them, political parties are required to submit the names of their authorised persons and specimen signatures to IEBC by October 15, 2026.
Their nomination rules must then be certified by October 30.
The timelines have increased pressure on political groups seeking to formalise their parties ahead of the polls, leaving Sifuna’s team with limited time to resolve the registration issue or settle on another political vehicle.
