The ongoing construction of the Kihunguro Footbridge along the Thika Superhighway is expected to improve pedestrian safety and ease traffic congestion in Ruiru once completed.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo indicated that the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is currently carrying out the project, a strategic infrastructure investment to enable the safe movement of pedestrian and motorist along one of the busy corridors.
Largely, Kihunguro has been a point where major accident blacksport, with pedestrians routinely crossing the highway at street level all the time despite the risk involved. Besides, these crossings often interfere with the traffic, causing heavy congestion along a busy highway
According to Omollo, this latest overhead footbridge will substitute the existing pedestrian crossing facility which currently poses a threat to both the motorist and the pedestrians. In this manner, the movement of both parties will proceed separately.
The new footbridge will have a staircase in one side and an ascending ramp on the other, making it a facility that can easily be used by disabled persons, wheel chair users, as well as pedestrians carrying goods.
Omollo emphasized that the government project reflects its commitment to safeguard lives by improving public infrastructure.
Once completed, it will reduce accidents, improve traffic conjestion and promote safe travel. Also, mobility shall be enhanced along the Thika Superhighway which is an important development axis contributing to sustainable socio-economic in the region.
