Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has handed over the leadership of the Jubilee Party to his deputy, Fred Matiang’i, setting the stage for a new phase in the party ahead of its National Delegates Convention (NDC).
Uhuru made the announcement on Tuesday, September 22, during a meeting with Jubilee officials in Nairobi, where he said he had decided to allow Matiang’i to take over the party leadership as preparations for the NDC continue.
The former President said he would remain a Jubilee member and continue supporting the party in a senior advisory capacity.
“While we wait for NDC, I have decided to let my deputy take over the party leadership. I want to ask you respectfully to accept Fred Matiang’i to take the position of Jubilee party leader,” Uhuru stated.
The transition places Matiang’i at the centre of Jubilee’s leadership as the party prepares for the NDC, which is expected to formalise the change in leadership.
Matiang’i, who has served as Uhuru’s deputy in the Jubilee Party, has now called on members to maintain the party’s stability and focus on its future.
The former Cabinet Secretary described Jubilee as a democratic party with the capacity to address its internal challenges, urging members and leaders to pursue available avenues for resolving disagreements.
“Jubilee is open for everyone,” Matiang’i said.
He appealed to party members to protect the stability of Jubilee as it enters the new leadership phase.
“I want to ask members to ensure Jubilee Party is stable and committed to the future,” he said.
Matiang’i also said different views within the party should be accommodated, encouraging members to engage through dialogue rather than allowing disagreements to affect the unity of the organisation.
“All views are welcomed, we can talk within the party to preserve the unity of the party,” he said.
His remarks come as Jubilee prepares to reorganise its leadership and structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
