A mass casualty road accident involving multiple vehicles has been reported at Kijabe along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in Kiambu County.

The Kenya Red Cross said its first responders were heading to the scene as rescue efforts got underway.

“Mass casualty incident involving multiple vehicles has occurred at Kijabe along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, Kiambu County,” the organisation said.

The Red Cross added that ambulances dispatched by the Social Health Authority (SHA) were already at the scene to assist in the rescue operation.

Several people are reported to have sustained serious injuries in the morning crash, although the exact number of casualties had not been confirmed by the time of publication.

The cause of the accident was also not immediately established.

Emergency teams were working to rescue those trapped in the wreckage and assess the extent of the injuries.

The crash is also expected to affect traffic along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as rescue teams and other emergency personnel operate at the scene.

Motorists using the route have been urged to exercise caution and allow emergency vehicles to access the accident scene.

The Kijabe section of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has previously recorded serious road crashes, raising concerns over safety along the busy route.

Authorities are expected to provide more information on the number of people injured or killed and the circumstances surrounding the latest crash as rescue operations continue.
