Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have recovered Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) fence gates and other items believed to have been stolen from a storage yard in Marurui, along Nairobi’s Northern Bypass.
The recovery was made by detectives from the DCI’s Operation Support Unit (OSU) during an operation linked to an investigation into a case of obtaining goods by false pretences.
The detectives searched the storage facility and found a large quantity of goods suspected to have been obtained through fraudulent dealings.
Among the items recovered were SGR fence gates, scaffolding equipment, steel rail bars, PPR pipes, metallic angle bars and block boards.
The haul also included industrial lubricants, engine oils, solar batteries, motorcycle batteries, LED lighting equipment and wall-coating products.
Event decoration equipment and various household utensils were also found at the premises.
The investigation started after a supplier reported that goods had allegedly been obtained from the company through fraudulent transactions.
According to the DCI, detectives traced some paint products linked to the complaint to the Marurui storage yard.
The complainant was later taken to the premises, where they identified the recovered paint as part of the consignment supplied in the disputed transaction.
The investigation has since widened as detectives seek to establish how the other goods ended up at the yard and who owns them.
A businessman linked to the case has already been charged with obtaining goods by false pretences.
On Thursday, August 6, the Makadara Law Courts ordered the suspect to remain in custody after prosecutors presented reasons why he should not be released on bail.
The DCI said the storage yard has been secured as crime scene investigators document the recovered items and process the scene.
Detectives are also working to establish the ownership of the property, trace the rightful owners of the recovered goods and identify other possible victims.
The agency said the ongoing investigations could lead to the recovery of more stolen property as detectives continue following the trail.
