Detectives in Busia have arrested three suspects after recovering 780.95 kilograms of cannabis sativa valued at an estimated Sh23.4 million during an intelligence-led operation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the operation was conducted in the Mabale area of Busia Township following a tip-off from members of the public.
A joint team of law enforcement officers raided a residential house where they discovered 15 large gunny bags containing the suspected narcotic drug.
“In a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation law enforcement officers based in Busia Sub-County have intercepted a consignment of cannabis sativa worth millions,”statement read.
According to the DCI, the consignment had an estimated street value of Sh23,428,500.
Those arrested were identified as Patrick Wandera Khasali, Simon Ogola Khasali and Dorine Glara Adongo.
The three suspects remained in police custody as detectives attached to the Anti-Narcotics Unit in Busia commenced investigations.
The detectives are seeking to establish the source of the drugs, their intended destination and whether the suspects were part of a wider trafficking network.
The DCI said the recovery followed intelligence provided by members of the public, highlighting the role of community reporting in combating drug trafficking.
The suspects are expected to face charges once investigations are completed and the relevant legal procedures are undertaken.
