Kenya is emerging as a leader in how governments can partner with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) companies to drive national progress. Moving beyond one-off pilot projects, Kenya is pioneering a coordinated, long-term collaboration that integrates AI deeply into society for measurable impact.
This innovative partnership approach has been shaped through extensive engagements in Nairobi and Silicon Valley. Ambassador Thigo and his team held high-level discussions with leading AI firms such as Anthropic, including its CEO Dario Amodei, and worked closely with Beneficial Deployments, Anthropic’s department focused on responsible real-world use of AI.
These interactions have forged a bold vision for AI that builds local capacity, emphasizes accountability, and aligns with Kenya’s unique national priorities.
At the heart of this model is a broad portfolio of collaborations targeting key sectors that affect the daily lives of Kenyans. Under President William Ruto’s leadership, AI is being deployed as a system across institutions, with clear goals for improving education, health, climate resilience, food security, public sector capability, and research.
Transforming Education through AI
The Future Ready Education Initiative is a prime example. This platform brings together educators, researchers, innovators, and AI companies to enhance teaching and learning. The initiative focuses on improving teacher skills, creating new learning pathways for students, and building widespread AI fluency, all while ensuring support for local languages and rigorous evaluation before scaling nationwide.
Improving Health Outcomes
In health, AI applications are targeted at practical solutions that save lives and improve public health. This includes enhancing disease surveillance, monitoring malaria trends, strengthening pandemic preparedness, supporting clinical research, and enabling better health systems planning. Crucially, all deployments are grounded in trusted data, clinical oversight, and measurable health impacts.
Building Climate Resilience
Kenya is also leveraging AI to tackle climate challenges head-on. Efforts to forecast floods and droughts, map infrastructure, and monitor the environment are already underway. More advanced initiatives explore digital twins and urban heat analysis to help communities adapt over the long term. Faster and more accurate forecasts enable better, quicker decisions that protect lives and livelihoods.
AI is being applied to boost Kenyan agriculture by combining satellite earth observation, weather data, and farming information. This supports farmers with crop monitoring, early warning systems, dairy productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and increasing access to finance and insurance—building more resilient food systems amid climate uncertainty.
In addition to such sectoral initiatives, Kenya realizes the necessity to develop institutional capacity to govern and utilize AI technologies responsibly. It is necessary to train the country’s public sector staff, including decision-makers and procurement teams, in AI literacy to enable effective evaluation and governance of technologies.
To keep pace with the rapidly evolving field, strategic foresight capabilities will be developed by Kenya’s executive branch to predict potential long-term economic, labor market, and security effects of using AI.
The development of AI is closely connected with research conducted in Kenyan universities and research institutions which will be engaged in assessment of existing AI technologies and production of evidence related to the inclusion of African languages, the reliability of AI models, child protection online, and effects on society.
The distinguishing feature of Kenya’s strategy of utilization of AI technologies lies in its systemic and comprehensive nature.
It implies a combination of all elements of AI policy from research to deployment and evaluation within a single framework. For tech companies, this will allow developing their products in real-world conditions.
For Kenya, this collaboration will result in development of strong institutions, local expertise, and applications of AI that respond to the population’s needs.
Whereas many nations see the development of AI as a competition, the case is not the same in Kenya because here we are embracing a completely different approach that sees the development of a future where AI is embraced in our social set up in a responsible manner.
