A routine journey on a Nairobi-bound bus ended in arrest for a 38-year-old passenger after detectives intercepted the vehicle and recovered heroin worth approximately Sh1 million during an operation in Taru, along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
Police claim that detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU)
acted on a tip-off with test purchase operation which led to the bus being stopped and searched.
On the course of the operation, the passenger sitting on Seat No. 29 was flagged by the Officers.
Upon searching his brown travel bag, four sachets of heroin, weighing 300 grammes, were found. Police also uncovered cash totalling Sh95, 000 that investigators believe may have been the results of a crime.
The suspect referred to as Brian Tabu Owuor, was instantly arrested and detained at the police station until further investigations. The cash recovered and the narcotics have been taken into evidence.
Police said the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court, where detectives are likely to seek orders to continue holding him as investigations are finalised before plea taking.
If formally charged, he will answer to offences related to trafficking in narcotic drugs under Kenya’s narcotics laws. The court will determine whether he will be released on bail or remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of the case.
