Kenya has signed a new KSh22.1 billion financial facility with Japan aimed at accelerating the growth of the country’s automotive sector and strengthening local vehicle manufacturing capacity.

President William Ruto announced that the agreement was signed between the Government of Kenya and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance, represented by its Chief Executive Officer Atsuo Kuroda, during a ceremony at State House Nairobi.

According to the President, the facility is a direct outcome of Kenya’s deepening economic engagement with Japan following his State Visit to Japan in 2024 and participation in the Tokyo International Conference on African Development in 2025.

The funding is expected to support efforts to expand local vehicle assembly and manufacturing, enabling Kenya to increase production of locally assembled vehicles while leveraging Japanese technology, expertise, and industrial experience.

President Ruto said the partnership reflects Kenya’s broader strategy of diversifying sources of development financing and attracting investments that contribute to industrial growth and job creation.

“Kenya will harness Japan’s capital, technology, and decades of industrial excellence to expand our local vehicle manufacturing capacity, placing more Kenyan-made cars on our roads,” he said.

The agreement comes as the government seeks to position Kenya as a regional automotive manufacturing hub through policies aimed at encouraging local assembly, reducing dependence on imported vehicles, and promoting value addition within the manufacturing sector.

Industry analysts say increased investment in vehicle production could stimulate growth across related industries, including steel fabrication, component manufacturing, logistics, and technical skills development.

The new facility is also expected to support the government’s industrialization agenda by enhancing competitiveness in the automotive value chain and creating employment opportunities for Kenyan workers.
