new electricity tariffs

Kenyans will soon have a chance to give their views on proposed electricity prices after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced a nationwide public consultation programme on new electricity tariffs set to run from 2026 to 2029.

In a notice issued on Sunday, EPRA said the exercise will guide the review of electricity retail tariffs for the 2026/27 to 2028/29 tariff control period, which will determine how much households and businesses will pay for electricity over the next three years.

The regulator also announced the postponement of an earlier consultation exercise that had been scheduled to begin on Monday, May 25, saying fresh dates had now been set for June.

According to EPRA, the retail tariff application was filed by Kenya Power & Lighting Company representing important actors in the energy sector, among them Kenya Electricity Generating Company, Geothermal Development Company, Kenya Electricity Transmission Company and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company.

“Representing electricity industry stakeholders, Kenya Power applied to EPRA for review of the Retail Tariff Application in line with the Energy Act for the sector,” the body said in its notice.

EPRA pointed out that the forums being organized were meant to collect views from consumers as well as other stakeholders prior to making the decision concerning the proposed charges.

It comes in the wake of complaints over higher monthly power bills following the latest increase announced by EPRA in electricity charges for the May 2026 billing period.

EPRA increased electricity charges through additional levies, which raised electricity rates by over KSh1 per unit. The move prompted public outcry over the computation formula adopted and lack of adequate public participation prior to announcing the new tariff.

EPRA is now urging members of the public to take part in the forums and provide their opinion prior to the approval of any new rates.

The forum is scheduled to be held in different towns within the country. These include Kisumu town on June 15, Eldoret town on June 16, Nakuru on June 17, Nyeri town on June 18, Nairobi on June 19, Garissa on June 22 and Mombasa on June 24.

The outcome of the rate review is likely to affect many individuals and companies which depend heavily on electricity for their activities.
