The government has intensified preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir, with the ultra-modern Wajir Stadium now reported to be 84 percent complete.
According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo, the project marks a major milestone for the region, which has never had a stadium since independence and has for decades relied on open grounds such as Wajir Baraza Park for public gatherings and sporting activities.
The 10,000-seater facility is being prepared in time for the June 1 Madaraka Day celebrations under the leadership of President William Ruto.
“Works are being fast-tracked ahead of the June 1st Madaraka Day celebrations, positioning the facility as both a national event venue and a long-term asset for sports development in the region,’statement read.
The stadium, being implemented by the Kenya Defence Forces through the Ministry of Defence, will feature a full-sized football pitch fitted with artificial turf, an eight-lane running track, modern changing rooms, VIP lounges, terrace seating, spectator amenities, ample parking space, and a borehole to ensure reliable water supply.
Government officials say the project is expected to boost sports development and economic activity in the wider North Eastern region by creating opportunities for local talent, supporting small businesses, and enhancing social cohesion through sports and community events.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating the project through a multi-agency approach to ensure the facility is ready for national celebrations and future public use.
